In September, this year Modi and the Indian government signed 3 ordinances which established larger and private corporations to step into the agricultural sector of the Indian economy. North India and Punjab account for 50% of all produce in India, however with these laws farmers will no longer be able to keep up with the production and will be forced to sell their land to big corporations.

In an effort to protect their livelihood, thousands of farmers from Punjab tried to peacefully protest in India’s capital, New Delhi. According to Al Jazeera, this was met with acts of police brutality from the Indian government, including tear gas, water cannons etc. Due to this the suicide rate of Punjabi farmers has multiplied by 12 and is still increasing. People in other countries have held protests too in support of the Indian farmers, including multiple in the UK.
