Stop Asian Hate

The United Nations issued a report stating there is ‘an alarming level’ of violent discrimination against Asian Americans, following evidence that shows there was an 1900% increase of Asian hate crimes in 2020. The BBC added that ‘these hate crimes are linked to the rhetoric that blames Asian people for the spread of Covid 19.’

In over 47 American states almost 3000 anti-Asian discrimination acts were reported to the Stop AAPI Hate database between March and December 2020. The Los Angeles Times announced 7.3% of these reports of hate incidents counted the elderly and vulnerable as victims. An 84-year-old Thai immigrant sadly died after being was shoved to the ground. In Oakland, a Chinese elderly man was robbed and assaulted outside of his home. A Filipino- American was slashed across the face in New York. An 89-year-old Chinese women was slapped and then set on fire, and these are just a list of a few of discriminative attacks against Asians. More recently, in mid-March 2021, 8 people were killed in a shooting at Asian owned spas in Atlanta, including 6 Asian-American women. When Captain Jay Baker of Cherokee County was asked about the shootings, he said the shooter ‘was fed up, at the end of his rope…..yesterday was a really bad day for him, and this is what he did.’ The captain was also caught tweeting about a shirt that read ‘ COVID-19. Imported virus from Chy-Na.’

However, the UK isn’t innocent either as the Guardian announced that ‘hate crime directed at south and east Asian communities has increased by 21% during the coronavirus crisis.’
